BioPod 1.5

After the 1.0 version I took a long break on this project as I was moving to Providence for graduate school. After my Summer term I addressed my biggest issue with the project, the lighting.

The lighting was not sufficient for even moss to grow without an external source. I thought would be okay as long as I stored it in a well lit area, and the LEDs would just be used at night for aesthetic purposes. However, I was not happy with the aesthetic aspects of everything being lit from the bottom. So I set out adding a light ring.

Design:

During my move, I broke the original glass dome. I was unable to find a replacement, as the original was purchased form a thrift shop. I purchased a slightly smaller Ikea version, that fit snugly just inside the bottom LEDs.

This new fit allowed me to pick up on the feature that housed the old dome, to form the foundation of the ring light.

Fabrication:

The uprights are made from old orchid rods I came across an abundance of.

The rest of the pieces were 3D printed.

I used the same LEDs and resistors as are used in the 1.0 assembly. I was much more conscious of my wiring for this part.
